The Millmerran Sheep Races is a major fundraiser for St Joseph’s Primary School. We are a small school with 80 enrollments and the Sheep Races is now in it’s seventh consecutive year. The Sheep Races is a great family day and every effort is taken in making sure the whole family gets good value for money and that each member has a wonderful time. The children are catered for with side show alley style rides including sumo wrestling, face painting, bouncy boxing and of course the mechanical bull. The Macquarie Wagyu Wine Marquee promises to be a hit with the ladies with a fashion parade of woolen garments from AWI as well as the Fashions Of The Field with many categories. The Sheep Races are on this  Saturday 28th August, gates open at 11am and the first of a six race program begins at 1pm. The calcutta draw and auction commence at 3.45pm and the final shall be run at 4.30pm. Our band Toowoomba’s “The Solitary Men”  start playing at 5pm and will break while the mechanical bull competition takes place. Students and staff at The Glennie School for in Toowoomba have celebrated the official opening of their new hospitality training centre recently. Member for Toowoomba North, Kerry Shine said the new centre was a major asset for the school community. “The hospitality centre offers an excellent training facility for hospitality students,” Mr Shine said. “It has a commercial training kitchen containing a barista-style coffee machine, and an industrial oven, and the neighbouring classroom can double as a function room for school events. “The hospitality students are putting it to good use – they helped cater for the Glennie Foundation cocktail party and have prepared morning tea for the official opening.” The State Government contributed $250,000 in capital assistance funding to the project, adding to the $850,000 raised by the school. Glennie School’s New Hospitality Centre Officially Open

Local primary school children are being encouraged to celebrate Children’s Book Week this week (August 21-27). Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine Week said “With the State Government’s continued focus on improving children’s literacy, Children’s Book Week represents another opportunity to help us spread the word about the importance of reading, and to encourage young Queenslanders to learn to love reading from an early age. I urge parents to make the most of any Book Week activities and celebrations taking place at local schools.” Children’s Book Week is organised by the Children’s Book Council of Australia and this year marks the program’s 65th anniversary, with the 2010 theme ‘Across the Story Bridge’. Member for Toowoomba North, Kerry Shine had quite a few interested students when he was invited to read a mystery book at the Rockville State School library. Mr Shine went on to say “Currently more than 60,000 students from 400 schools are involved in the fifth annual Premier’s Reading Challenge, which sets reading targets for all primary students in Queensland. Children’s Book Week Celebrations

“Treasures from the Royal Collection” is the topic chosen by Oliver Everett for the public lecture he will present for the Toowoomba Group of the Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society (ADFAS) on 24 August. The Royal Collection comprises more than 485,000 objects collected by the Royal Family over the past five centuries. It includes works by many great artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Rembrandt, Monet, Lucian Freud and Michelangelo; porcelain; jewellery; furniture and manuscripts. Oliver Everett has selected about fifty of the finest items in the Collection to speak about in his illustrated lecture. Oliver Everett is well qualified to speak on his chosen subject having served in the Royal Household in several positions including that of Librarian in the Royal Library, Assistant Keeper of the Royal Archives and Private Secretary to Diana, Princess of Wales. He is a graduate of Cambridge University, Tufts University (USA) and the London School of Economics. Oliver Everett’s lecture will be given in the Glennie Room, The Glennie School, Herries Street, Toowoomba on Tuesday 24 August starting at 6.45 pm and will be followed by supper. Members of the public are welcome to attend. The cost is $20 for persons who are not members of ADFAS and $10 for students. Calendar for Disability Action Week

The third annual Leon Treadwell Memorial charity golf day in aid of the Oncology (Cancer Care) Unit at the Toowoomba Hospital will be staged at the City Golf Club on Friday 3 rd September. Leon was an avid golfer at City, representing the club in representative Pennant competition, before his untimely death at the young age of 32 due to an extremely rare cancer disease to his appendix. A schoolboy friend from Leon’s Charleville days, Kris Currie, contacted Toowoomba Hospital Foundation CEO Peter Rookas and so far the two memorial days have been a huge success, raising in excess of $10,000. Kris said Leon was a great friend and he appreciated how well he was treated at the Oncology Unit at Toowoomba Hospital during his illness. “I wanted to do something to perpetuate Leon’s memory so what better than a golf day to help the cancer care unit, and especially at his favourite golf club”. Hospital Foundation CEO Peter Rookas was easy to convince to help organise the day. ‘I played golf with Leon and know his wife Leah and their two lovely girls. And I knew our staff at the Toowoomba Hospital cared for Leon and remember him fondly so it was a natural to get involved with the day.’ The event will be a 4-a-side Ambrose with a shotgun start at 11.30am with the entry cost just $30 player ($120 a team) and there will be a host of great trophies on offer. The Leon Treadwell Memorial shield will be presented to the team with the best nett on the day. Leah with daughters Emily (l) and Jade (r) and good friend Kris Currie who came up with the idea of the Memorial golf day…. (Leon’s widow, Leah and local identity Michael Betros (who lost his wife Jodie to cancer) found romance and love after both their tragic losses and have a little boy, LACHLAN JOEL BETROS  – The name Joel is derived from their two precious late spouses, Jodi and Leon).. Memorial Golf Day to Aid Cancer Unit

Kiyua Performing Arts Inc, formerly known as The Community Performing Arts Project, is a not for profit organisation that provides dance and drama classes free for young people. Their vision is ‘A community based group nurturing self worth and personal development through performing arts’. On Sunday 22nd August, Kiyua will be holding a ‘Choreography Day’ at ‘The Barn’ on Flagstone Creek Road, Toowoomba. The day starts at 9am and will run till about 2.30pm. The young people divide into groups, get given a song and make up a dance as a team. They have lunch, then the groups perform their dances as the finale to the day in the afternoon. They are provided with a free sausage sizzle, and cake to celebrate the anniversary of the start of the project. The Project has the full support of the Toowoomba Regional Council with the patron of the project being Cr Carol Taylor, who will be present and mingling with the young people. This Sunday is special as we have Mayor Peter Taylor coming down at about 1.30pm to acknowledge our junior teachers, the young people (14-22yrs) who give up their Saturdays and other times to teach and mentor other young people.
